Kate sharing the fun

Kayla, Kate, & Meaghan with their friends  Khaya, Arnaldo, Zolani, and Thembekile
Yesterday was a very exciting day for at least 3 of us here at Loch Road…Meaghan, Kayla and myself invited 4 of the boys from Beautiful Gate to come spend the night at our house. The whole thing started on Monday when Kayla and I joked with Nokuzola about taking 2 of the boys home with us sometime. Things turned rather serious when Nokuzola replied, “Alright, I will arrange something.” The next day 2 turned to 3, and soon we were filling out forms to take 4 boys out for the weekend. On Wednesday we found out our once wishful thinking was actually becoming a reality when we got to invite the boys over ourselves. Although not very vocal about it, we could see the excitement in their eyes. Khaya, the sweetest 9-year-old boy I have ever met, told us he wanted Coke for dinner. We also caught two of the boys pumping their fists in the air and high fiving as they ran back to their cottages.

The boys arrived last night around 6ish. After a rather thorough tour of the house, the boys naturally ended up in the pool. As anticipated, Logan and Joe immediately became the center of attention for the boys. It was so cute watching the two 20 year olds become little boys themselves and play with the other 4 as friends. Khaya, Arnaldo, Zolani, and Thembekile all wanted cheeseburgers for dinner. So, that’s what they got. After dinner the boys all somehow ended up taking turns in the shower. It turned in to a spa night of sorts when all the boys asked for q-tips (ear buds) and lotion (which they kept calling lotion from the ocean because of the blue bottle it came in) after washing. The night ended with watching Toy Story 3, however, I’m quite certain all of them were asleep within the first half hour.

The boys had to be woken up today at 6 am to take their medicines. The plan was for them to go back to bed after taking their pills, but I realized that was a lost cause when I walked in to them doing flips on to a mattress 20 minutes later. The boys were so excited for the day to start they could just not understand that no one was awake to go swimming with them because it was currently 7 am. After some breakfast and a quick dip for the boys, the 7 of us headed down to the waterfront. The aquarium was our first stop, where we saw tons of fish, sharks, devil rays, and massive amounts of kelp. After a quick ice cream break, we took them on the Ferris wheel.  Zolani was rather terrified, but the rest of the group seemed to enjoy it, although it was very apparent the sugar high hadn’t kicked in yet. We took a taxi home after the ride, and the boys immediately sprinted upstairs to put on their swimsuits and soon after out to the pool. And that’s where they spent the afternoon. Nokuzola came to pick them up around 5, and I think we were as equally upset as they were that the time had come for them to leave. I’m also quite sure I speak for all of us at Loch Road in saying that we miss them terribly already!!
